Dear Disney, Please Fix This Horrible Photo of Hawkeye

Disney Cruise Lines is known for its immersive experiences, where vacationers get to hang out with their favorite characters. Disney is expanding its character appearances on its ships to include Marvel characters like our beloved expert marksman Hawkeye. It sounds great, right? Well – there’s one problem. Disney’s promotional team royally messed up the logistics of the archery in Hawkeye’s photo.

Disney’s Public Relations Manager Jonathan Frontado posted the error-filled photo on Disney’s official blog. All he wanted to do was promote the Disney Cruise Line’s superhero extravaganza “Marvel Day at Sea,” but instead presented a photo that would make any archer do a double-take. Hawkeye has been featured as part of the Avengers for years, and we love seeing his archery skills on the big screen. Hawkeye is supposed to be the greatest marksman the world has ever seen, but it’s hard to grasp that concept when you see the cruise line actor holding the bow in all the wrong ways.

Orlando Weekly writes, “I don’t know much about archery other than what I was taught at summer camp, but I do know that you don’t fire an arrow from between your fingers…or from the wrong side of the bow.” Give yourself more credit, dear author, you know more about archery than you think.

We spotted a few things wrong with the photo, so we’ll break it down one by one:

Putting the arrow between your fingers is a sure-fire way to land yourself a trip to the E.R. When you release the shot, the force of the arrow sliding across your fingers will likely cause damage. Not even an Avenger can fix a severed finger.

The actor is holding the bow awkwardly. The natural rest of where the arrow should sit is located on the side of the archer’s bow arm, or in this case, the right side of the bow. Fake Hawkeye wouldn’t have to put the arrow between his fingers on the left side of the bow if he used the actual bow’s shelf correctly. At least he has his draw hand correct?…

Psyche! There’s a problem with that, too. Even the world’s best archer can’t aim properly with the bow held that low. It’s not even remotely close to eye level and doesn’t use an anchor point, which is typically the corner of your mouth or below your chin. If you shot from that position, you wouldn’t have the slightest clue of where that arrow could end up. How are you supposed to be a productive member of the Avengers like that, Fake Hawkeye? We can only hope they were going for a “mid-draw” action shot in this scenario.

We love Marvel and we love Hawkeye – so Disney, please teach your actors how to properly shoot a bow. Have them take a basic crash course with Jeremy Renner or an archery instructor. We wouldn’t want any impressionable young children thinking that what’s presented in the photo is how they should shoot at the archery range. Archery is a great sport, and we’re glad there’s a superhero that represents the craft. But it should be about safety first, even on a Disney Cruise.
